At the 2023 World Series of Poker (WSOP), Jason Mercier emerged victorious in Heads-Up action against Mike Watson in Event #60: $1,500 No-Limit 2-7 Single Draw. For the 36-year-old Florida, USA player, this is his sixth gold bracelet, so it's a historic victory. The expert poker player took home the first-place prize of $151,276.
Remarkably, this matchup was a rematch of the 2016 World Series of Poker $10,000 No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Championship. Mercier emerged victorious from the event, his fourth WSOP trophy. Watson was beaten.
548 professional poker players entered the most recent tournament in hopes of taking home a portion of the $731,580 prize pool. Naturally, Mercier took home the largest portion of the prize money, with Watson earning $93,495 for finishing in second place.
Below are the top seven finishers in the $1,500 No-Limit 2-7 Single Draw final table:
Mercier talked about the rematch with Watson before the historic win at Horseshoe and Paris, a legal casino in Las Vegas. He boasted that he had defeated Watson in each of their four meetings at important poker tournaments. This time, though, he was still dubious, calling it a "déjà vu" because Watson had finished second and third in their meetings.
He went on:
“You know, going into heads up, I was a little worried that he was finally going to get me. But luckily, I ran hot and was able to beat him again.”
Mercier began playing poker professionally in 2000, and from then until 2017, he earned at least $1 million. At that time, he held five WSOP bracelets and was ranked eleventh on the cash leaderboard. Remarkably, he chose to pause his video poker game and prioritize his family.
Mercier came back to the competition in 2022 after having three children, and he still looked good after a five-year break. At the 2022 World Series of Poker, he finished sixth in the $50,000 High Roller Pot-Limit Omaha competition and sixteenth in the $10,000 Razz Championship. He took home the PokerGO $25,000 10-Game Championship earlier this year.
