On Thursday morning, a bomb threat led to the evacuation of Rivers Casino Philadelphia. Local media reports indicate that the threat was baseless.
The local police were informed about the incident around 5:30 a.m. No explosive device was discovered and the casino returned to regular operations.
Two men were interviewed after the threat, as reported by Philadelphia TV station WPHL. There’s no information available on whether they were charged related to the incident.
Initial reports indicated that an unidentified individual contacted authorities with a vague threat, as reported by Pennsylvania radio station KYW. A minimum of twelve police officers initially reacted.
Philadelphia police did not deploy their bomb squad to the casino; however, Pennsylvania State Police and specially trained canine units conducted a search of the premises.
According to local reports, police were still blocking guests and staff from entering the casino as of 7 a.m. Multiple police vehicles arrived and were stationed at the casino entrance.
"Rivers Casino Philadelphia was briefly evacuated this morning out of an abundance of caution while police checked the building,” according to a statement released by the casino. “The property was determined to be safe, and team members and guests returned soon thereafter. The casino is open and operating today as usual.”
The casino, formerly called SugarHouse Casino, is located in Philadelphia’s Fishtown area close to the Delaware River. It includes 1,521 slot machines, 72 table games, and 28 poker tables. A sportsbook features 33 self-service betting terminals and six wagering windows. The estate features a casino complex spanning 1,300,000 square feet over 22 acres.
In December 2023, Rivers Casino launched Riversuites Hotel at The Battery Philadelphia. The all-suite property with 62 rooms is located within The Battery, a multifunctional development in an old power plant.
Along with 62 guest rooms, the 500K-square-foot Battery features 171 residential apartments, office areas, a lobby bar, an indoor gym, coworking space, a rooftop pool, a library and study, and a golf simulator.
Earlier in the evening, a bomb threat was examined at the Desert Diamond Casino in Tucson, Arizona, as reported by KVOA, an Arizona television station.
The casino was searched by the Tohono O’odham Police Department, and there was no immediate sign of a bomb being located.
